Ready to test out some Amaco glazes and see how they work with your favorite clay body? Join us for a hands-on glaze exploration workshop where you’ll have the chance to experiment with 25+ Amaco Cone 5/6 glazes. Bring your own bisque-fired Cone 5 clay pieces to test layering techniques and discover new glazes you may not have used before. Unlike our in-store sample pots, which are typically tested on one clay body, this workshop allows you to see how the combination of glaze and clay body produces different effects. It’s the perfect opportunity to find the best glaze options for your unique pieces.
What’s included: • 25+ glazes to sample • Take home the last bit of glazes you used in class • A $10 coupon for Cone 5/6 Amaco glazes
What to Bring:
• 5 bisque-fired Cone 5 clay pieces (clean, dust-free, and residue-free). We recommend:
• 1 cylinder to test layered glazes on a vertical surface
• 1 tile or plate for horizontal surface testing
• 3 additional pieces to explore smooth vs. textured surfaces
• 5 or more brushes of various sizes
• Boxes and wrapping to take your glazed pieces home
There will be some cone 5 bisque pieces available for purchase.
Lara Suenram, Stone Leaf Pottery’s General Manager, is teaching this workshop. Firing is not included, but available for an additional cost. Preregistration is required – space is limited!

Calico is a versatile cone 5/6 stoneware known for its warm, speckled appearance. Its speckles beautifully enhance glazes, creating a rustic and refined look. A phenomenal clay body that throws smoothly and fires gritty, Calico works well for all forming methods and levels of experience. It also offers good durability and minimal warping, making it a favorite for both functional and decorative pottery. Calico’s texture and color make it a great choice for potters looking to achieve an organic, earthy aesthetic. Its 60 mesh sand gives a medium texture.
Ingrid’s take on Calico:
The image below shows Laguna’s cone 5/6 Calico clay. I made it in 2010. It is glazed with Laguna’s MS-20 Royal Blue glaze and wiped back from the non-recessed areas. I hung it in my back yard. Here it is keeping company with an English cucumber. I leave it out year round, but please note, there are no areas where water can be trapped, frozen, expand, and not escape, cracking the piece.

For our segment featuring a Stone Leaf staff member’s interview, we have Emelio! Emelio’s our Stone Leaf OG, having guided our store’s customers with sage advice since 2021.

[SLP] What do you love most about pottery?
[EMELIO] “What I love most about pottery is that I will die one day. Presence is a pleasant reminder of that. If I can be here, I can be anywhere. Same in the ways that when you touch a spinning pot in one place and influence its whole. Same as the memory of collapsed pot returns to kneaded clay returns to the still point. Being that I will die one day and that's why I love pottery.”

[SLP] Kiss, marry, kill: throwing, hand-building, glazing?
[EMELIO] “Every exhaustible combination. And also no combinations at all. I would take hand-building on a hike. Glazing in a cave. I'd like to throw on a train. There is a movie called Snowpiercer that takes place on a train. I wouldn't throw on that train. I would take glazing to an airfield. There's something I'm trying to get to.”
[SLP] What’s your secret weapon of tools?
[EMELIO] “There is a room in which I sit. Directions to get there include everyone leaving building, an hour playing chess with my feet on the front counter, scrolling, scrolling, scrolling, letting my phone die, forgetting to eat, forgetting others exist, or at least that they don’t require me for anything, playing music then turning it off, full belly breathing to the edge of my sense, cracking my next and becoming the clay. It is only then can I open the door to being in the studio.”
[SLP] What's your sage advice for a young grasshopper just starting out in pottery?
[EMELIO] “Speak about your experiences. Show the world how you see, how you feel, what you think is important. Listen to other people. Listen to women. Listen to black women. Listen to trans folks and migrant voices. Break yourself open. Cry about it all. Listen to disabled bodies. Cry about it all. Keep hope. Read Kindness by Naomi Shihab Nye. Lose yourself because every found thing is a lost thing. Find yourself in the work, whatever it may be. Rest where you may.”
[SLP] If you were a clay tool, what would you be?
[EMELIO] “There is no clay.”
[SLP] What's a must-experience pottery experience you'd recommend?
[EMELIO] “Showing up for yourself, however that is. Engaging in your community, however that is. Forgiving yourself, however that is. Giving it voice, however that is.”
Thanks, Emelio! Tune in next time for another interview.

All Clay of the Month purchases are limited to 100# of clay. The sale price is valid only in April 2025 and not combinable with other discounts.
It's not uncommon for us to run out of the clay(s) of the Month, so we always suggest you shop early in the Month to ensure the clay is in stock. Also, when purchasing Glaze or Tool(s), or Equipment of the Month, again, it's limited to products on hand. So, if we don't have it when you shop, come shop with us again soon! We replenish our shelves constantly—we'll hopefully have more soon! Got more questions about how this works? Please, please reach out to us!
During the freezing months, we will not accept returns on clay or liquid chemical products such as wax resist. As much as we wish we could take back that half-frozen bag of B-Mix, we can’t repurpose it. Thank you for being mindful.
