July '25 Newsletter

Published by Elise on Jul 2nd 2025

The temperature’s been steadily rising and there’s no better feeling than getting your hands on some cool clay. Whether you’re stocking up for long studio days or diving into a summer project, we’ve got everything you need to keep those creative sparks fired up.

Upcoming  Workshop

For July workshops, we have an Underglaze Pencil Workshop coming up, taught by our very own Ingrid King!

Saturday, July 26; 10:00am - 12:30pm

$25 per person

Underglaze pencils are more than a studio necessity—they’re the perfect illustrative tool! Learn different ways to use underglaze pencils from Ingrid, who has used underglaze pencils in her stoneware pieces since 1974, including extensive dinnerware designs. Underglaze pencils can provide a soft pastel look to your pottery, and an easy way to outline designs with less stress than brushing on underglaze outlines. Discover your new favorite design approach in this workshop!

Participants should bring

  • Two or more bisque-fired pieces, white, red, or light brown clay, with smooth surfaces,

  • Two underglaze pencils, different colors (or come with a friend and share) **Please note, black, blue, brown, and green will be best!

  • Two or more small brushes, one round #5 or smaller, one detail round brush about #2 or smaller, and one flat #4 -#6

  • One small sponge

  • A #2 lead pencil

Sign up by registering online, give us a call or feel free to ask a staff member on how to sign up!

CLAY OF THE MONTH
Whitestone Leaf Pottery Clay

In honor of Ingrid’s birthday, we wanted to offer you an incredible discount on Stone Leaf Pottery’s house clay! Here’s Ingrid’s take on Whitestone:

“Thirty years ago there was a Laguna Clay store in Denver. When my family and I moved to Arvada, I wanted to find a local clay source. After checking out several different clay bodies at the Denver Laguna store, Whitestone was recommended to me. I fell in love with it. It is a textured porcelaneous stoneware that fires a creamy white. It will go 3’ wide by 3’ tall for a person with the skill set to work at that size. For me, it has about a 1% cracking rate, which is outstanding. It’s super responsive for throwing, as well as hand-building. Be aware, because of the porcelain content, one must avoid porcelain warping issues. (Don’t dry it in a draft, and never swear at it.) We used Whitestone with tremendous success in our teaching studio for over twenty years. This is the clay we use in Stone Leaf’s teaching studio.”

A favorite for those who love the look of porcelaneous stoneware and don’t mind a bit of grit, grab a bag today!

TOOL OF THE MONTH
K34 Trimmer Knife - 15% off

We’re highlighting a fantastic studio staple this month! Everyone needs a short blade around when they’re working and Kemper’s certainly comes handy in a variety of ways. For jobs where slim and sharp counts, this multi-use tool can do no wrong! Used for trimming clay and cutting out designs, this semi-flexible blade is keenly sharpened for a smooth cut. The stainless steel blade is firmly set in a smooth hardwood handle for a total length of 5″. Portable, easy to use and made to last, you can always count on a K-34 short blade.

GLAZE OF THE MONTH
Laguna MS18, 15% off

A cone 5 blue wonder, Robin’s Egg can do just about everything. From gorgeous combinations to safely saving a piece in a re-fire, its consistency is just perfection. Soft, speckled and endlessly lovely, Laguna’s Robin’s Egg glaze brings a dreamy look to any piece. Great on different colors of clay bodies, it offers a robin’s egg blue base with natural brown speckling that breaks over texture and edges. It loves to work nicely with other glazes and always has something to bring to a finished piece. Ideal for stoneware, this glaze is food-safe and can add a fresh pop of color to your work!

Ingrid King’s Tip of the Month…

…involves glazing!

Graphic summing up Ingrid's tip of the month about how to glaze your work evenly.

If you are brushing glaze onto a piece like a bowl or a mug, sometimes waiting for each coat to dry before you can hold the piece and apply the next coat is tedious. I work around that by brushing the glaze on the exterior first, then I set the piece down right side up, and then glaze the interior. I do this for each successive coat. Usually the coats dry quickly enough so I can rotate touching the dry glaze if I need to change the position of the piece. Happy firing!

Thank you, Ingrid!

Staff Interview: JASON RAINEY

For our June Stone Leaf staff member interview, we have Jason! Jason is our throwing aficionado and clay connoisseur. Able to throw enormous bowls and vases in minutes, Jason’s a phenomenal artist who brings a special light to Stone Leaf Pottery. Here are his words of wisdom.

[JASON]  I've been making pottery since 2018. I taught at Community Clay for a little bit, and then I taught at Friend Assembly a couple times, and now mostly, I just teach out of my garage at my business Rainey Pottery. I started it in 2023, and it’s been alive ever since. I feel like I’m always learning.

[SLP]  Kiss, marry, kill: throwing, hand-building, glazing?

[JASON]  Marry throwing, kiss handbuilding and just murder glazing.

[SLP]  What’s your secret weapon of pottery tools?

[JASON] Do-All by Mudtools.

[SLP] What’s your favorite clay body recently?

[JASON] BMX by Rocky Mountain. I find it's really easy to throw. It's pretty forgiving. I like how Rocky Mountain keeps their stuff a little on the wetter side so that it's pretty easy to center. It's really quick to throw for me.

[SLP] What do you love about your art?

[JASON] I have some really great ideas coming in the pipeline, but I haven't had time to really make art. I've really just been making, crafting right now. Crafting to improve my skills to be able to make art.

[SLP] If you met somebody who's new to pottery, what would be your piece of advice for the young grasshopper?

[JASON] Don't keep your first 100 pots. Wreck them, do them over again. Don't even keep one pot. Just make it to just practice. Don't even try to keep anything. Just boost yourself and your skills first.

Thank you so much, Joseph!

Elise and the Stone Leaf Pottery Crew

All Clay of the Month purchases are limited to 100# of clay. The sale price is valid only in July 2025 and not combinable with other discounts.

It's not uncommon for us to run out of the clay(s) of the Month, so we always suggest you shop early in the Month to ensure the clay is in stock. Also, when purchasing Glaze or Tool(s), or Equipment of the Month, again, it's limited to products on hand. So, if we don't have it when you shop, come shop with us again soon! We replenish our shelves constantly—we'll hopefully have more soon! Got more questions about how this works? Please, please reach out to us!

During the freezing months, we will not accept returns on clay or liquid chemical products such as wax resist. As much as we wish we could take back that half-frozen bag of B-Mix, we can’t repurpose it. Thank you for being mindful.
