We’re coming into one of the busiest seasons of the year as folks prepare for the holidays. Don’t forget to take moments to enjoy the last of the leaves and the warmth of tea and coffee while the weather gets chillier. It’s a beautiful fall and it’ll be a lovely winter. Everything will get done, and when in doubt, you can come to Stone Leaf for your supplies and questions!
We don’t have an Electric Kiln Workshop coming up in November, but we will have one in December! Call or register online!

We’ll walk through the basics of kiln use, including loading, programming, maintenance, and troubleshooting, with plenty of tips & tricks along the way.
Taught by Stone Leaf Pottery store manager Joseph Allen, this beginner-friendly class is ideal for anyone new to firing and looking to build confidence with their kiln.
Join us Saturday, December 9 from 9:00am–1:00pm. Cost: $75 — or FREE with the purchase of a new kiln from Stone Leaf Pottery within the past two years! Bagels and coffee provided

Ingrid King’s Tip of the Month…
|
|
|
|
…involves cold weather affecting clay
|
|
|
|
|
As our weather gets colder, it’s not unusual to find that your clay is cold. Cold clay is less mobile, making your hands cold as the clay just doesn’t slip and slide as well.
Some things to consider include:
-
Make sure to place your clay on top of a piece of furniture. Do not leave your clay on the floor, where a cold floor will spread the cold into your clay.
-
If your work space is chilly, consider placing your clay on a heating pad. If you have a longer heating pad, you may be able to wrap the heating pad all the way around a 25# bag of clay.
-
When clay is frozen, it separates into layers of clay and slime. If your clay does freeze, it is not ruined, but it will need to be wedged or pugged to make the clay homogenous again. The advantage of freezing is that it increases mold growth. Mold is an inescapable part of working with clay, and freezing and thawing clay increases mold growth. Greater amounts of mold allows the clay to be thrown more easily. Some potters actively cultivate mold in their clay, as it’s considered a benefit! So often people associate mold as “bad”, but in the clay world, it often is a positive.
-
On a sunny day, consider placing some clay on a counter, or a window sill. If your cat likes to nap there, it may be a good place to warm your clay.
-
A faster approach to warming your clay is microwaving it. I have only done that perhaps 5 times. I made sure the microwave was completely clean, and I proceeded slowly with care, and wedged the clay after heating it in the microwave.
If you have another method to keep your clay warm, please let us know!
Happy Firing!
Thank you, Ingrid!

For our November Stone Leaf Pottery staff interview, we have Lo! Our newest staff member, Lo is a brilliant artist and creative connoisseur with a plethora of knowledge on the art world. Kind and lovely, we’re very lucky to have them at Stone Leaf.
|
|
|
SLP] What brought you to Stone Leaf Pottery?
[LO] What brought me to stone leaf—more like who brought me to stone leaf. Moving to Denver recently I made the sweetest connections with some beautiful potters and immediately showed interest on how I would love to get back into ceramics—maybe even work there. Thankfully everyone was open to that idea and brought me in with open arms.
[SLP] Kiss, marry, kill: throwing, handbuilding, glazing?
[LO] I would have to say marry handbuilding because that is what made me fall in love with ceramics. Kiss glazing cause I need to glaze my pieces! Unfortunately I have to kill throwing!
[SLP] Tell us about your background! Where did you come from, where are you going?
[LO] I was born as a high desert rat in California. I lived a very nomadic life, moved all over the west coast. Then some opportunities started to show up here in Denver and of course I took it—best decision I’ve ever made.
[SLP] What advice would you give to a young grasshopper just starting out in pottery?
[LO] I would say to be patient and very forgiving! Ceramics is a multi-step process and so many different things can happen in between all of that. So I would say always be in the mindset to just create whatever you want, and if it doesn’t work out try it again because every time it’ll be different!
[SLP] Do you remember the first piece you made?
[LO] The first piece I made was this woman figure as a vase and she was fired in a raku fire!
[SLP] What inspires you to make stuff? [LO] What inspires me to make stuff is always seeking that feeling of satisfaction when you create this beautiful piece from clay out of the earth. My friends also truly inspire me every day as well and to be able to gift art is my favorite part about it!
[SLP] What’s a project you’d like to tackle in the future? [LO] A project I would like to tackle in the future is to make very elaborate sculptures, some jewelry for friends and a dishware set for my mom!
