Upcoming  Workshop

For first-time kiln owners or those transitioning to newer models, this hands-on intro workshop covers the ins and outs of electric kilns—perfect for beginners! We’ll walk through the basics of kiln use, including loading, programming, maintenance, and troubleshooting, with plenty of tips & tricks along the way.

CLAY OF THE MONTH
Laguna
Maya Red Cone 10

Fantastic news, folks: Maya Red is back at Stone Leaf as a regular clay body! A cone 10 showboat and our GM Lara’s favorite clay body, this clay is incredibly versatile in the studio. A medium‑red stoneware containing 60‑mesh sand for added strength and texture, it’s great for throwing, handbuilding, and sculptural forms. With a balanced shrinkage (~12%), it stays strong against warping thanks to sand reinforcement—great for large or hollow pieces. This clay is perfect for potters looking for a robust, textured red clay body with versatile firing atmospheres and a solid structure. Grab a bag today!

We’re hyped to bring you a wild and funky new option in our mid-fire glazes. The fresh line of Amaco Crawl Glazes has hit our shelves and we’re celebrating by discounting them for August! Bring your pieces to life with unique, spontaneous patterns every time. Engineered to intentionally pull back (crawl) during firing, creating dramatic texture and revealing the clay or underlying glazes, they can also be layered with other glazes to create fascinating effects (images of several combos below)! The creative potential is endless. Traditionally seen as a flaw, these glazes are bringing back the crawl.

Ingrid King’s Tip of the Month…

…involves glazing!

Graphic summing up Ingrid's tip of the month about how to glaze your work evenly.

My guess is most, if not all of us, have mixed water colors searching for just the right shade of green, for a softer, lighter blue, grey, and so on. We learned in elementary school that red, yellow, and blue were the primary colors, and that mixing red and yellow = orange, mixing red and blue = purple, and mixing blue and yellow = green. Mix opposites, like yellow and purple, and some shade of brown appears. Yep, that’s water colors, pigments.

Confusingly, the ingredients used to create glaze products are not generally pigments, they are chemicals, generally found on the Periodic Table of Elements. Mix a blue glaze and a yellow glaze and chances are very low, you won’t achieve a grass green. You are far more likely to achieve an olive green. Mix a transparent, clear glaze with brown, and yes, you are likely to achieve another transparent glaze, but it might be a transparent ochre, not a lighter brown.

Layered and blended glazes can be very exciting, but also not produce what you are hoping for. Here we are again. Test, test, test!

Thank you, Ingrid!

Staff Interview: Lara Suenram

For our August Stone Leaf staff member interview, we have Lara! Lara is Stone Leaf’s treasured General Manager, mold-making and glaze-layering savant, and all-around beautiful soul. Skilled at making one-of-a-kind wall hangings, vases and a variety of other goods, if you’re able to catch any advice from her, you’re a lucky potter.

[SLP] How many years have you been making pottery?

[LARA]  Since 2019! I jumped in just before moving to Denver and haven’t looked back.

[SLP]  Have you had any jobs teaching?

[LARA] Yes! I taught a class on Amaco glazes—super fun. Loved sharing tips and geeking out with fellow glaze lovers.

[SLP] Kiss, marry, kill: throwing, hand-building, glazing?
[LARA] Kiss glazing, marry handbuilding, kill throwing. The wheel and I are in a love-hate saga—some days magic, other days chaos.

[SLP]  What’s your secret weapon of pottery tools?
[LARA] My new plastic mold housing setup for making plaster molds—small but mighty, and super handy for custom forms.

[SLP] What’s your favorite clay body recently?

[LARA] Calico! I’m obsessed with its gritty texture and earthy tone. It brings great character to my minimalist pieces.

[SLP]  Advice for a young grasshopper?

[LARA] Don’t box yourself in—explore everything! There’s so much more to pottery than just one path.

Thank you so much, Lara!

Elise and the Stone Leaf Pottery Crew

All Clay of the Month purchases are limited to 100# of clay. The sale price is valid only in August 2025 and not combinable with other discounts.

It's not uncommon for us to run out of the clay(s) of the Month, so we always suggest you shop early in the Month to ensure the clay is in stock. Also, when purchasing Glaze or Tool(s), or Equipment of the Month, again, it's limited to products on hand. So, if we don't have it when you shop, come shop with us again soon! We replenish our shelves constantly—we'll hopefully have more soon! Got more questions about how this works? Please, please reach out to us!

During the freezing months, we will not accept returns on clay or liquid chemical products such as wax resist. As much as we wish we could take back that half-frozen bag of B-Mix, we can’t repurpose it. Thank you for being mindful.
