Description

This is the main source of barium oxide in glazes where it functions as a flux and assists in producing matte finishes. It is also used to neutralize sulfates in clay bodies.

We STRONGLY encourage you to use Strontium Carbonate instead of Barium Carbonate (0.75 to 1) in any glaze recipes that call for Barium due to the hazardous nature of having this material in your studio.

Barium carbonate is toxic to humans and can cause a number of health effects, including:

  • Skin and eyes
    • Irritation and burning
  • Inhalation
    • Irritation of the nose, throat, and lungs, which can cause coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath
  • Ingestion
    • Harmful, and can affect the central nervous system, gastrointestinal system, respiration, cardiovascular system, and kidneys
  • Very high exposure
    • Barium poisoning, which can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, irregular heartbeat, muscle weakness, tremors, paralysis, and even death
